The Band (Cello)
Since completing a postgraduate degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (MMus Solo cello: Distinction), Zosia Jagodzinska has enjoyed an exciting and varied career as a cellist, improviser, composer and singer-songwriter across the UK and Europe. A highly versatile and creative musician, her work spans a wide range of styles including contemporary classical, jazz, folk, electronic and experimental. Her cello playing has been described as ‘beautifully expressive’ (Peter Quinn, Jazzwise) ‘sympathetic and imaginative’ (All About Jazz-Bruce Lindsay), ‘Haunting... hums with longing’ (The Quietus) and ‘quivering and evocative’ (Pitchfork), with numerous broadcasts on BBC Radio 1,2,3,4 and 6, Jazz FM, Mezzo TV, ITV, Netflix, Channel 4 and BBC Iplayer. Her compositions and songs have been described as ‘Full of great depth, power and integrity... haunting and beguiling.” (The Progressive Aspect). Her playing and solo improvisations have been featured on several critically acclaimed records including Djrum’s ‘Portrait with Firewood’ (nominated for Gilles Peterson ‘Album of the Year’ 2019), ‘Meli I’ and 'Meli II’ by the BRIT nominated electronic duo Bicep, and ‘La Loba’ by Jazz vocalist and songwriter Fini Bearman. Performance highlights include European tours and sold out shows at the Queen Elisabeth Hall with Djrum and the London Contemporary Orchestra (Solo + Principal cello); performances and a live album recording with Mercury nominated Lisa Hannigan and stargaze (Principal Cello) at Barbican Hall and National Concert Hall, Dublin; Featured vocalist and songwriter on Dan Samsa’s ‘Contours’, with immersive surround sound live shows at the Albany Theatre and EartH, Hackney; Benji Bower’s ‘Terra Collective’ at Mayfest and Falmouth International Arts Festival; Britten Pears Contemporary Ensemble (Principal Cello) at Aldeburgh Festival. She was selected as a Britten Pears Young Artist in 2019 and received numerous scholarships and prizes throughout her cello studies. Zosia enjoys working as part of a creative team in cross-arts collaborations. Professional theatre highlights include The Tempest at Shakespeare’s Globe, Richard III at Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Secret Cinema: Casino Royale, ‘Dot Squiggle Rest’ at Royal Opera House and Polka Theatre; Recording Benjamin Kwasi Burell’s score for ‘Best of Enemies’ at the Young Vic Theatre, Noel Coward Theatre (West End) and National Theatre Live; Songwriting and composing for Tall Tails Theatre Company. As a composer and improviser Zosia has collaborated regularly with choreographers and dancers including Anna Watkins (Watkins Dance) and Bawren Tavaziva (Tavaziva Dance). Zosia studied contemporary dance and circus skills for many years and loves dancing Lindy Hop and Charleston in her spare time
